Essential oils are becoming a trend nowadays and through that, it has also brought awareness of the benefits of these miracle oils can give. We use Eucalyptus essential oil to treat sinusitis and diffuse Lavender essential oil to improve our sleep quality. As avid essential oil users, have you ever wondered which essential oils that are safe for your kids and which that can potentially cause harm?

While essential oils have their own special benefit, they can also contradict their main benefit if not used properly. For example, Rosemary essential oil can be used to improve blood circulation but people with high blood pressure are not recommended to use this oil. While it is no problem for most adults to use most oils, which may be safe for you might not be safe for your children.

Dilution Rate

While you find that you can use essential oils topically without diluting, it is very important for you to dilute essential oils before applying it on your child’s skin. Infants, toddlers and children’s skins are much more sensitive than adults and depending on age, some require essential oils to be diluted at a higher rate. Remember, less is always more when using essential oils.

0 to 6 months old: Newborn infants are strictly not allowed to use essential oils at this age as using these oils may interrupt their growth in the early development stage.

6 to 24 months old: Although most recommend a dilution of 0.5% (1 drop : 10ml carrier oil), we recommend a higher dilution rate of 0.25% (1 drop : 20ml). This is because babies this age still have a thin layer of skin, therefore very sensitive to highly concentrated oils.

2 to 10 years old: The dilution rate of essential oils for children this age ranges from 0.5% (1 drop: 10ml carrier oil) to 1% (3 drops: 10ml carrier oil).

It is important to note that children should not ingest essential oils of any type whether diluted and especially undiluted, no matter if your essential oil provider said otherwise. Researchers have found that using essential oils orally on children can bring many health complications including stomach pains, respiratory problems, seizures, comas, and even death. Apart from that, make sure to consult with your pediatrician first before using any essential oils on your children, either by diffusing or applying the diluted oil.
