1. What’s the difference between green, natural, organic, vegan and clean beauty?
Throughout the years, we come across a lot of beauty products with the term green, natural, organic, vegan and clean beauty. What are the differences?
Green and natural beauty generally refers to beauty products that are sourced from nature. There can be a certain percentage of synthetic ingredients used for the formulation of beauty products. A product can still be categorised as natural even if it just have 1% of naturally-sourced, plant-derived or mineral ingredients.
Organic beauty uses natural and organic ingredients. Just like natural beauty products, organic ones may also contained low percentage of synthetic ingredients. To be known as organic, the beauty brands have to follow stringent guidelines and disclosure in order to get their brands certified organic. If it is an organic plant-derived beauty products, plants that are cultivated by nature means that those that are planted on unpolluted land without the use of non-organic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides.
Vegan beauty product do not have animal produce, such as honey, dairy, lactic acid, biotin and lanolin, which are derived from animals.
Clean beauty generally will stir way from toxic, harmful synthetic ingredients, such as paraben, SLS/SLES, sulphates, phthalates, synthetic colouring or fragrances, petroleum derived and etc. Most clean beauty brands incorporated plant-based ingredients, with some using a low percentage of safe synthetic ingredients or naturally-sourced ingredients as their preservatives.
2. What is the difference between the essential oils brands that you carry with Young Living, Doterra and Pure by Melaleuca?
Why is that your essential oils are so much cheaper compared to them?
Are your essential oils pure?
The most prominent difference will be the business model. We are a small, independent retailer and where as some of the reputable brands out there are running on a multi-level marketing (MLM), network marketing, referral marketing or direct-selling business schemes. Since no financial or commission compensation plan is involved, we are able to offer direct and straight forward selling price from our distillers, with a small margin, to our customers, the ol’ fashion, retailing method.
Our pure essential oils are sourced from independent, reputable, small distillers around the world. Quality to us are our utmost priority and we did the due diligence in analysing the Certificate of Analysis for each oils plus using it ourselves beforehand. After all, as an essential oil users ourselves, not only we want what is the best for ourselves, we want to share the best with our customers too.
The other essential oils brands that we carry also impart stringent control on their end to ensure quality oils are sourced with the proper certification in place, either for their organic or pure essential oil range.
Nevertheless, we applaud Young Living, Doterra and Melaleuca for coming up with excellent quality oils, especially their essential oil blends. Most of our customers used interchangeably between our essential oils with Young Living, Doterra and Melaleuca essential oils too.
3. Is essential oils edible/taken orally/consume/ingest?
Is it safe to consume essential oils?
Can we eat or drink essential oils?
There are always two school of thoughts on whether essential oils are safe to be edible, taken orally, consumed or ingested. Although our essential oils are 100% pure and natural, we DO NOT RECOMMEND pure essential oils be taken orally, consume or ingested.
Essential oils contain some constituents that can be toxic, irritating or sensitising to different people when used in large or small doses. Everyone reacts differently to the same food eaten or environment. That also applies to essential oils too. What might work best for someone, might not be for you because your body, skin, environment, mental and physical condition is nurtured differently.
Just because essential oil is 100% pure and natural, it does not mean that it will not harm certain people. Harm from essential oil does not necessary derive from the impurities or adulteration from that particular essential oil, but on the constituents or chemical compounds of that essential oil itself. Essential oils have immense benefit to our wellbeing and beauty when we use them safely, and when safety is taken care of, we can reap the full benefits that they bring.
The Alliance of International Aromatherapist (AIA) has issued a statement on the internal use of essential oils in 2011:
“AIA does not endorse internal therapeutic use (oral, vaginal or rectal) of essential oils unless recommended by a health care practitioner trained at an appropriate clinical level. An appropriate level of training must include chemistry, anatomy, diagnostic, physiology, formulation guidelines and safety issues regarding each specific internal route (oral, vaginal or rectal).”
Clinical aromatherapy is about targeting a specific clinical symptom and measuring the outcome. Although aesthetic aromatherapy may not be part of the remit of nurse, occupational therapist, physical therapist or physician, clinical aromatherapy clearly is. It can be subdivided into medical aromatherapy (this includes oral use) and nursing aromatherapy (covers internal skin use but not oral use). In France, Germany and Switzerland, the oral use of essential oils lies within the remit of physicians. [The Evolution of Aromatherapy; Jane Buckle PhD, RN, in Clinical Aromatherapy (3rd Edition), 2015].
Always have a trained physicians to give proper advice on the administration of essential oil for consumption or ingestion, should you choose to.
4. Can I apply essential oil neat or directly on my skin?
We DO NOT RECOMMEND direct, neat or undiluted essential oil to be applied to the skin. Every one of us have different skin condition and skin sensitivity. Direct, neat or undiluted application of essential oil on the skin may cause irritation, sensitivity or rashes on the skin.
We came to know of a certain customer’s friend, who use neat Lavender essential oil on her hands. She claimed she didn’t feel any irritation, sensitivity or rashes when used neat in the beginning. Despite our customer’s advice to her dear friend to dilute her Lavender essential oil before applying on her hands, the friend brushed her aside. A few years down the road, our customer’s friend suffered the worst sensitisation on her hands. Even the most mild, gentle, unscented lotion, sensitised her badly.
Certain people, when they applied neat essential oil on their skin, they might only experience severe irritation, sensitisation or rashes a few years later on, although the symptoms are not shown now.
Essential oils are nature’s volatile aromatic compounds generated within flowers, leaves, trees, roots, herbs, bushes and seeds. The power of essential oil lies in its constituents. Essential oils are highly concentrated and potent due to the extraction method through steam distillation, cold-pressed or CO2.
Always dilute essential oils with carrier oils, lotion or moisturisers before applying it to your skin as safety. You can find our guide to diluting essential oil as below for reference.
Guide to Diluting Essential Oils for Topical Use
Our rule of thumb is, for every 10ml of your carrier oil, the most that you should use is 2 drops of essential oil, for your body.
|Drops of essential oil to 5ml carrier oil||1||2||3|
|Drops of essential oil to 10ml carrier oil||2||4||6|
|Drops of essential oil to 15ml carrier oil||3||6||9|
|Drops of essential oil to 30ml carrier oil||6||12||18|
|Drops of essential oil to 50ml carrier oil||10||20||30|
|Drop of essential oil to 100ml carrier oil||20||40||60|
